Welcome to the blogsite of Once Were Radicals, the title of the new and highly irreverent memoir of Irfan Yusuf. Irfan is a Sydney-based lawyer, writer and freelance columnist and commentator who writes for Australian and international media on issues relating to a host of political, social, cultural and sporting issues. His work has been published in over 15 newspapers in Australia and New Zealand.

Once Were Radicals was the winner of the 2007 Iremonger Award for Writing on Public Issues.

About the author ...

Irfan Yusuf is a Sydney-based lawyer, commentator, blogger and author.

He was educated in Sydney, apart from brief stints in Karachi and Princeton. He completed his legal studies at Macquarie University and the University of Technology, both in Sydney. He has practised law since 1994, his main area now being employment and workplace relations.

Irfan has written profiles, op-eds and reviews in over 15 major newspapers in Australia and New Zealand including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, The Age, Canberra Times, Brunei Times and New Zealand Herald. He also writes regularly for popular online portals including Crikey, NewMatilda, OnlineOpinion and ABC Unleashed. Irfan’s work has also appeared in Eureka Street, Malaysiakini and the Webdiary. He has also blogged for the Daily Telegraph.

Irfan is a regular columnist for the Crescent Times newspaper published in Perth. He is also a columnist and associate editor of AltMuslim.com.

Irfan has been interviewed on TV and radio in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia and France on a variety of matters relating to the Australian politics, Muslim communities, cricket and the law.

Irfan is a Research Associate at the Australian Homeland Security Research Centre in Canberra. Since 2005, he has been a White Ribbon Day Ambassador campaigning to eliminate all forms of violence against women.
